Police Kill Suspected Armed Robber In Army Uniform

The Police in Ogun State say its operatives have shot and killed a suspected armed robber who was dressed in an Army uniform.

The suspected robber was shot dead in the early hours of Friday along the Shagamu/Benin expressway, following a distress call received by the police in Ijebu Ife at about 2:45 am that a gang of armed robbers in military camouflage fully armed had blocked the expressway and were dispossessing motorists of their valuables.

According to a statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP, Abimbola Oyeyemi, upon the information, the Divisional Police Officer, Ijebu ife Chief Superintendent of Police, Raphael Ugbenyo, quickly mobilised his anti-robbery team as well as a team of special anti-robbery squads (SARS) to the scene where the suspect was gunned down.

“On sighting the policemen, the robbers engaged them in gun battle which lasted for about 30 minutes. At the end of the encounter, one of hoodlums was shot dead while others escaped into the nearby bush with various degrees of gunshot injuries,” he said.

Oyeyemi further stated that two mock guns, a cellular phone, assorted charms and a search light were recovered from the scene.

“The corpse of the dead robber has been deposited in the mortuary, while effort is on to apprehend the fleeing members of the gang,” the PPRO noted.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police CP, Edward Ajogun, who praised his men for their efforts ordered a thorough combing of the entire area so as to bring the escaped members of the gang to justice.

He also appealed to members of the general public especially hospitals to alert the police if anyone with bullet injury is seen in their area.

The Commissioner of Police has, therefore, reiterated his earlier warning to criminals to steer clear of Ogun State, adding that the command is ready more than ever to take the battle to their door steps.
